TCF and TEF Canada in Montreal

In Montreal, Alliance Française de Montréal at 317 Place d'Youville in Old Montreal runs both the TCF Canada and the TEF Canada, the federal exams IRCC accepts for Express Entry and citizenship. Seats fill weeks ahead of popular dates, so register early. One important note for Montreal: TCF Canada and TEF Canada are not the same as TCFQ and TEFAQ, the Quebec selection exams. Book the federal test if your application goes through Express Entry.

What to expect in Montreal

From candidate accounts and official centre information. Written in our own words, never republished.

01

Book early. Candidates report Montreal seats filling weeks before busy dates across every centre, and there is no real waitlist, so register as soon as your target month opens and keep a backup date in mind.

02

Exam day runs on a tight script. A candidate who sat the TCF here described an ID check, a form, a photo, and assigned rooms, with phones and bags stored away under a token and no real break between the listening, reading, and writing sections.

03

Watch two traps candidates flag often. The TCF listening interface advances on its own and gives little time to preview the answers, and the writing has a strict word count, so going outside the range can mean a task is not graded.

04

Expect a friendly speaking examiner and a fairly quick turnaround. One candidate said the examiner was welcoming and did not interrupt the first task, and that results promised in about two weeks arrived in one.

FAQ

Montreal centre FAQ

Is the Montreal exam TCF Canada or TCFQ?

Alliance Française de Montréal runs the federal TCF Canada and TEF Canada used for Express Entry and citizenship. TCFQ and TEFAQ are separate Quebec selection exams. Pick the federal test if you apply through IRCC, and confirm the exam name when you register.

How early should I book the TCF or TEF in Montreal?

As early as you can. Candidates routinely report Montreal seats filling weeks ahead of popular dates, with no waitlist once a session is full. If your centre has nothing, candidates often check other Montreal centres before settling on a date.

What catches people out on exam day in Montreal?

Two things come up repeatedly: the TCF listening section advances automatically with little time to read the options first, and the writing word count is enforced, so a response outside the stated range risks not being graded. Practise both under timed conditions.
