Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about TEF & TCF Canada exams

About the Exams

Q:What is the difference between TEF Canada and TCF Canada?

A:

Both are official French language proficiency tests accepted by IRCC for Canadian immigration. TEF Canada is administered by the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIP) and has 60 listening questions in 40 minutes. TCF Canada is administered by France Éducation International and has 39 listening questions in 35 minutes. Both test the same four skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

Q:Which exam should I take - TEF or TCF?

A:

Both exams are equally accepted by IRCC. Your choice may depend on: test center availability in your area, exam fees, test format preference, and scheduling convenience. We recommend trying practice tests for both to see which format suits you better.

Q:How long are TEF and TCF scores valid?

A:

Both TEF Canada and TCF Canada test scores are valid for 2 years from the test date for immigration purposes.

Q:Can I retake the exam if I'm not satisfied with my score?

A:

Yes, you can retake either exam as many times as you want. There is no waiting period between attempts, though some test centers may have their own booking restrictions.

CLB Scores & Immigration

Q:What CLB score do I need for Express Entry?

A:

For Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) program, you need minimum CLB 7 in all four skills. For Canadian Experience Class (CEC), you need CLB 7 for NOC 0 or A jobs, or CLB 5 for NOC B jobs. Higher scores give you more Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points.

Q:How are TEF/TCF scores converted to CLB levels?

A:

IRCC provides official conversion tables. For example, in TEF Canada listening: 316-360 points = CLB 10, 298-315 = CLB 9, 280-297 = CLB 8, 249-279 = CLB 7. Visit our CLB Conversion page for complete tables.

Q:Can I get extra CRS points for French?

A:

Yes! If you have good French skills (CLB 7+) AND strong English skills (CLB 5+), you can get up to 50 bonus CRS points. Additional French points are awarded in the Comprehensive Ranking System even if English is your first official language.

Q:Do I need French for Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP)?

A:

Requirements vary by province. Some provinces like Quebec require French, while others give additional points for French proficiency. Ontario and New Brunswick have specific French-speaking streams with lower requirements for bilingual candidates.
