Canada is collaborating internationally to improve migration systems and tackle common challenges. Minister Lena Metlege Diab led the Canadian delegation at the International Migration Review Forum (IMRF) 2026 held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. At the forum, Canada reaffirmed its commitment to the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration and emphasized the importance of international partnerships to support economic growth, sustainable immigration, and resilient communities.
The Canadian government has pledged around $7 million to support eight international projects focused on strengthening migration management and expanding safe migration pathways in Southeast Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Additionally, Minister Diab introduced five commitments centered on ethical AI use in migration, whole-of-government approaches, labour mobility initiatives, combating migration-related misinformation, and capacity-building through international assistance.
While the announcement primarily highlights global migration policy and system capacity-building, these efforts contribute indirectly to Canada’s immigration programs like Express Entry by fostering stable migration environments and supporting labour mobility worldwide. Canada continues to prioritize efficient, well-managed migration systems that benefit both migrants and local communities.
