The Government of Canada is advancing its plan to boost housing supply in Halifax by investing in skilled trades and supporting modern construction methods, according to a recent update from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). The Spring Economic Update 2026 accelerates over $7 billion in low-cost loans to finance up to 16,500 new rental homes, while also addressing labour shortages critical to home construction.
IRCC emphasizes immigration’s role in tackling skilled trades labour gaps through category-based selection in Express Entry and collaboration with provincial nominee programs. These efforts align with a broader $6 billion commitment to recruit, train, and retain electricians, carpenters, welders, and other construction workers nationwide.
Additionally, $41.9 million will be dedicated over five years to modernize the homebuilding system by streamlining regulations and encouraging modular and factory-built housing. Halifax has also secured nearly $79 million from the federal Housing Accelerator Fund to fast-track the creation of around 8,900 new homes over the next eight years.
These initiatives are part of Canada’s coordinated approach to strengthen economic growth, build communities, and improve housing affordability by facilitating faster construction with a skilled workforce and innovative building techniques.
