IRCC to Enhance 2026 Express Entry Draws with New Talent-Focused Categories

Speaking notes for the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship: Prioritizing top talent in 2026 Express Entry Categories

Canada's Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Lena Metlege Diab, outlined plans to refine the Express Entry system in 2026 to better attract skilled workers critical to the economy. The government will continue targeting candidates with strong French skills, as well as those in healthcare, social services, trades, and STEM fields through focused rounds of invitations. Extending beyond existing categories, new streams will include researchers and senior managers with Canadian work experience, transport professionals like pilots and aircraft mechanics, and skilled military personnel with job offers in the Canadian Armed Forces. These changes align with Canada's broader International Talent Attraction Strategy, aiming to connect top global talent with labor market demands. The Express Entry system will maintain emphasis on candidates who meet precise skill profiles involving education, language, and work experience. Additionally, the system supports Canada's Francophone immigration goals, with plans to welcome over 30,000 French-speaking newcomers annually outside Quebec. The minister emphasized ongoing collaboration with provinces, territories, and employers to ensure immigration selection matches Canada's economic and social priorities. IRCC is also working on improving pathways through foreign credential recognition and aims to provide predictability and stability for stakeholders relying on the immigration system. These measures come as part of a wider effort to stabilize immigration levels, address labor shortages, and maintain public confidence in Canada's immigration processes, following population and service pressures seen in recent years due to increased temporary residents and pandemic impacts.
