Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) marked Citizenship Week 2026 by honoring new Canadians and reflecting on the responsibilities and values of citizenship. From April 12 to 18, more than 80 ceremonies were held nationwide, welcoming roughly 6,000 new citizens from 40 different countries as they took their oath of citizenship.
Minister Lena Metlege Diab participated in ceremonies across Ottawa, Lunenburg, and Halifax, emphasizing the importance of belonging and community involvement in building an inclusive Canada. Many events included Indigenous Elders who provided land acknowledgements and messages highlighting the significance of Indigenous cultures and reconciliation.
While the announcement does not directly address Express Entry or selection draws, Citizenship Week highlights the final step in the immigration journey—becoming a Canadian citizen following permanent residence through programs that include Express Entry. IRCC notes that over 356,000 people on average have obtained citizenship annually over the past four years.
The Minister also recognized youth contributions during the ceremonies, awarding a local Girl Guides member for community engagement, underscoring the role of active citizenship in Canada’s future.
