IRCC to Refine 2026 Express Entry System to Prioritize Skilled Talent

Speaking notes for the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship: Prioritizing top talent in 2026 Express Entry Categories

Canada's Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Lena Metlege Diab, outlined key updates to the Express Entry system for 2026 aimed at attracting highly skilled workers to support the nation's economic priorities. The Express Entry platform, which manages permanent residence applications for the Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Workers, and Federal Skilled Trades programs, will continue to prioritize candidates proficient in French and those with experience in health care, skilled trades, and STEM fields. Additionally, new categories are being introduced to target researchers, senior managers with Canadian work experience, transport workers such as pilots and aircraft mechanics, and skilled military recruits with job offers from the Canadian Armed Forces. These additions support economic growth, innovation, trade logistics, and national security objectives. The government is maintaining its commitment to Francophone immigration by planning to admit over 30,000 francophone newcomers annually over the next three years, aiming to reach 12% francophone immigration outside Quebec by 2029. Efforts include ongoing collaboration with provinces and territories and improvements in foreign credential recognition to enhance newcomer integration and labour market access. These measures form part of a broader strategy to restore balance to Canada's immigration system, aligning intake with labour market needs while maintaining support for humanitarian goals. IRCC emphasized continued engagement with stakeholders to refine the Express Entry system and ensure it remains responsive and predictable for employers and communities.
