IRCC to Enhance 2026 Express Entry Draws with New Talent-Focused Categories

Speaking notes for the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship: Prioritizing top talent in 2026 Express Entry Categories

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced plans to refine the Express Entry system in 2026, focusing on attracting skilled workers critical to Canada’s economic growth. The government will maintain existing priority categories including candidates with strong French language skills and those in healthcare, social services, trades, and STEM fields. New categories will be introduced for researchers, senior managers with Canadian work experience, transport professionals such as pilots and mechanics, and skilled military recruits with job offers from the Canadian Armed Forces. These changes aim to support innovation, infrastructure, trade, and national security. IRCC also highlighted the continued importance of Francophone immigration, targeting over 30,000 francophone newcomers annually and aiming for 12% of francophone immigration outside Quebec by 2029. The department is pursuing a broader international talent attraction strategy to meet labour market needs and ensure employers can hire with confidence. Ongoing efforts include collaboration with provinces and territories and improvements in credential recognition to facilitate faster integration of skilled immigrants. These adjustments come as part of broader government commitments to restore balance in immigration levels following recent challenges and to reinforce Canada’s economic and social priorities through a controlled and predictable immigration system.
