IRCC to Focus on Skilled Talent in New 2026 Express Entry Categories

Speaking notes for the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship: Prioritizing top talent in 2026 Express Entry Categories

In a recent speech, Canada's Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Lena Metlege Diab, outlined key updates to the Express Entry system for 2026. The government will continue category-based invitation rounds targeting candidates with strong French language skills and work experience in health care, trades, and STEM fields—areas critical to national infrastructure, economic growth, and innovation. New categories are being introduced to support changing labor market needs, including pathways for researchers and senior managers with Canadian experience, transport sector workers like pilots and aircraft mechanics, and skilled military recruits with job offers from the Canadian Armed Forces. A dedicated category for foreign medical doctors with Canadian experience was also highlighted to improve healthcare access. Express Entry remains central to Canada's strategy for attracting selected skilled immigrants who meet economic priorities. The government is committed to maintaining a predictable and balanced immigration system by working closely with provinces, employers, and stakeholders, as well as refining candidate selection and credential recognition processes. These measures form part of a broader International Talent Attraction Strategy aimed at stabilizing immigration levels while prioritizing top talent to support Canada's economic and social priorities, according to IRCC.
