IRCC to Focus Express Entry on Skilled Talent and New Priority Categories in 2026

Speaking notes for the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship: Prioritizing top talent in 2026 Express Entry Categories

Canada’s Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced plans to prioritize top talent through the Express Entry system in 2026. The government will maintain existing invitation rounds targeting candidates proficient in French and those with experience in health care, trades, and STEM fields—areas critical to economic growth and national infrastructure projects. New categories are being introduced for researchers, senior managers with Canadian experience, transport workers like pilots and mechanics, and skilled military recruits with job offers from the Canadian Armed Forces. These changes align with broader government initiatives to attract innovation-driven talent and support sectors vital to Canada’s economy and security. Additionally, IRCC continues efforts to increase Francophone immigration outside Quebec, aiming for over 30,000 francophone newcomers annually, enhancing economic diversity across communities. Through these targeted selection strategies, IRCC aims to improve predictability and stability in immigration pathways, supporting employers and regions in meeting labour market needs while maintaining sustainable immigration levels.
