IRCC to Enhance Express Entry with New Talent-Focused Categories in 2026

Speaking notes for the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship: Prioritizing top talent in 2026 Express Entry Categories

Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Lena Metlege Diab outlined plans to prioritize skilled talent through Canada's Express Entry system in 2026. Building on existing categories, IRCC will continue rounds targeting candidates with strong French skills and experience in health care, social services, trades, and STEM fields. These sectors are critical to Canada's economic growth and infrastructure development. New to the 2026 Express Entry draws are categories for researchers and senior managers with Canadian experience, transport workers like pilots and aircraft mechanics, and skilled military recruits with job offers from the Canadian Armed Forces. These additions reflect a strategy to attract candidates who can contribute to innovation, trade, security, and defense priorities. IRCC also highlighted its ongoing efforts to support Francophone immigration outside Quebec, aiming to welcome over 30,000 francophone newcomers annually and reach 12% francophone immigration outside Quebec by 2029. The government continues to refine candidate selection and scoring in collaboration with provinces, employers, and community partners to ensure the immigration system meets labour market needs while maintaining stability and predictability. This focus on targeted economic immigration is part of a broader International Talent Attraction Strategy that emphasizes sustainable growth and rebuilding confidence in Canada’s immigration system, after pandemic-related adjustments and population pressures.
