IRCC to Enhance Express Entry Talent Categories for 2026

Speaking notes for the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship: Prioritizing top talent in 2026 Express Entry Categories

The Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Canada's Minister of Immigration, outlined updates to the Express Entry system aimed at attracting top skilled workers in 2026. Express Entry remains central to selecting candidates for permanent residency through the Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Workers, and Federal Skilled Trades programs. IRCC will continue prioritizing candidates with strong French language abilities and experience in healthcare, trades, and STEM fields to support critical sectors and Canada's infrastructure projects. New categories will be added for researchers, senior managers with Canadian work experience, transport workers such as pilots and aircraft mechanics, and skilled military recruits with Canadian Armed Forces job offers. These changes align with the government's broader International Talent Attraction Strategy, aiming to meet labour shortages and foster economic growth while supporting innovation and security. Minister Diab also reaffirmed commitments to Francophone immigration, targeting over 30,000 francophone newcomers annually outside Quebec through 2029. Invitation rounds for healthcare professionals, including doctors with Canadian experience, are underway. The updated Express Entry approach focuses on predictable outcomes for employers and communities, ensuring system stability and faster pathways to integration, including cooperation with provinces on credential recognition.
