IRCC to Enhance Express Entry Selection for Skilled Talent in 2026

Speaking notes for the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship: Prioritizing top talent in 2026 Express Entry Categories

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) outlined plans to prioritize top talent in its 2026 Express Entry draws. The Minister of Immigration announced that IRCC will continue inviting candidates with strong French skills and work experience in health care, trades, education, and STEM fields. New categories will also include researchers, senior managers, transport workers such as pilots and aircraft mechanics, and skilled military recruits with job offers from the Canadian Armed Forces. Express Entry, which manages applications for the Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Worker, and Federal Skilled Trades programs, will emphasize selecting candidates who meet Canada's evolving economic needs, particularly in innovation and infrastructure sectors. The system awards points based on factors like skills, education, language proficiency, and work experience. Additionally, a dedicated 2026 category will support foreign medical doctors with Canadian work experience to help address healthcare demands. The government also reaffirmed its commitment to increasing Francophone immigration, aiming to welcome over 30,000 francophone newcomers annually and reach 12% Francophone immigration outside Quebec by 2029. These initiatives are part of a broader government strategy to manage immigration levels sustainably, address labor shortages, and support economic growth, while ensuring predictability and stability for employers and communities.
