The Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Canada's Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, outlined plans to sharpen the Express Entry system in 2026 to better attract and retain skilled workers. Express Entry remains central to Canada's strategy for managing permanent residence applications under the Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Workers, and Federal Skilled Trades programs.
Building on existing category-based invitation rounds, IRCC will continue targeting candidates with strong French language skills and experience in key sectors like health care, trades, and STEM fields. Newly introduced Express Entry categories in 2026 will prioritize researchers, senior managers with Canadian experience, transport occupations such as pilots and aircraft mechanics, and skilled military recruits with Canadian Armed Forces job offers.
These changes aim to meet Canada's evolving economic and labour needs, supporting innovation, infrastructure development, and national security. The government also reaffirmed its commitment to increasing francophone immigration outside Quebec, aiming for 12% of admissions by 2029.
IRCC emphasizes continued collaboration with provinces, territories, employers, and stakeholders to refine selection criteria and improve pathways, including recognition of foreign credentials, ensuring the system remains balanced, predictable, and aligned with Canada's economic goals.
