IRCC to Enhance 2026 Express Entry Draws with New Talent-Focused Categories

Speaking notes for the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship: Prioritizing top talent in 2026 Express Entry Categories

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced plans to refine its Express Entry system in 2026 to better attract skilled workers aligned with Canada's economic priorities. Building on existing draws, IRCC will continue inviting candidates with strong French skills and those experienced in healthcare, social services, skilled trades, and STEM fields. New categories will target researchers, senior managers with Canadian work experience, transport workers such as pilots and aircraft mechanics, and skilled military recruits with Canadian Armed Forces job offers. These changes support Canada's broader innovation and defence strategies while addressing critical labour shortages. Express Entry remains central to Canada's talent attraction efforts as the system manages applications under the Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Workers, and Federal Skilled Trades programs. Candidates are ranked based on skills, education, language, and work experience to meet labour market needs effectively. Additionally, IRCC reaffirmed its commitment to increasing Francophone immigration outside Quebec, aiming to admit over 30,000 francophone newcomers annually over the next three years to strengthen communities and fulfill workforce demands. The department also emphasized ongoing collaboration with provinces, territories, and employers to ensure the immigration system remains predictable and supports Canada's economic growth while maintaining program integrity and sustainability.
