IRCC to Enhance 2026 Express Entry Draws Targeting Key Talent Sectors

Speaking notes for the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship: Prioritizing top talent in 2026 Express Entry Categories

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is refining its Express Entry system in 2026 to better attract and retain skilled workers essential for Canada's economic growth. The government will continue inviting candidates with strong French skills and experience in health care, trades, and STEM fields. New categories will also be introduced for researchers, senior managers with Canadian work experience, transport sector workers, and skilled military recruits with job offers from the Canadian Armed Forces. These steps aim to address critical labour shortages, support innovation, and strengthen sectors related to housing, infrastructure, and national security. In addition, a dedicated pathway for foreign medical doctors with Canadian experience will remain active to improve healthcare access. IRCC's approach focuses on balancing immigration levels, meeting labour market demands, and enhancing the predictability of the system for employers and communities. The strategy complements broader government initiatives to recruit international talent and boost Francophone immigration outside Quebec, aiming for 12% francophone newcomers by 2029. Overall, the changes signal a targeted effort to stabilize and modernize Canada's immigration framework while prioritizing top talent through Express Entry. IRCC continues collaborating with provinces and territories to remove barriers and streamline credential recognition processes.
