IRCC Sets New Priorities for 2026 Express Entry Draws to Attract Top Talent

Speaking notes for the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship: Prioritizing top talent in 2026 Express Entry Categories

Canada’s Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced updates for the 2026 Express Entry selection system, focusing on attracting skilled workers to meet key economic and labour demands. The existing categories prioritizing French-speaking candidates, healthcare professionals, tradespeople, and STEM workers will continue to be favored in upcoming invitation rounds. New Express Entry categories will be introduced, including pathways for researchers and senior managers with Canadian experience, transport sector workers like pilots and aircraft mechanics, and skilled military recruits holding job offers from the Canadian Armed Forces. These changes align with federal initiatives to promote innovation, infrastructure, trade, and national security. Additionally, a dedicated category for foreign-trained medical doctors with Canadian work experience, announced in late 2025, will help retain healthcare professionals in the country. IRCC also reaffirmed commitments to increasing Francophone immigration outside Quebec, aiming for over 30,000 annually and targeting 12% by 2029. These measures form part of a broader effort by the Canadian government to balance immigration numbers, improve system predictability, and strengthen economic growth by selecting candidates with skills in high demand. IRCC continues to collaborate with provinces and stakeholders to streamline immigration pathways and support newcomers’ integration.
