IRCC Outlines New Express Entry Focus for 2026 to Attract Skilled Talent

Speaking notes for the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship: Prioritizing top talent in 2026 Express Entry Categories

Canada’s Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has revealed plans to refine its Express Entry system in 2026 to better attract highly skilled immigrants in key sectors. Express Entry, which manages applications for federal skilled worker, skilled trades, and Canadian experience classes, will continue targeting candidates with strong French language skills and those in health care, social services, skilled trades, and STEM fields like engineering and cybersecurity. New categories will be introduced to welcome experienced researchers and senior managers with Canadian work experience, as well as workers in critical transport roles such as pilots and aircraft mechanics. A specialized pathway for skilled military recruits with job offers from the Canadian Armed Forces will also be launched, supporting Canada’s defense and security priorities. Additionally, IRCC will maintain its emphasis on Francophone immigration, aiming to admit over 30,000 French-speaking newcomers annually through 2028 to enhance community and economic vitality outside Quebec. Invitations to eligible candidates, including foreign medical doctors and other health professionals with Canadian experience, will be issued soon. These updates align with Canada’s broader International Talent Attraction Strategy, focusing on predictable and balanced immigration to meet economic needs and support labour market demands. IRCC is working closely with provinces and stakeholders to streamline immigration pathways and improve foreign credential recognition as part of efforts to maintain a sustainable and effective immigration system.
