IRCC Outlines New 2026 Express Entry Categories to Prioritize Skilled Talent

Speaking notes for the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship: Prioritizing top talent in 2026 Express Entry Categories

Canada's Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Lena Metlege Diab, has announced updates for the 2026 Express Entry system aimed at attracting top global talent to support economic growth. The Express Entry platform manages applications for permanent residence under the Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Workers, and Federal Skilled Trades programs. The government will continue current category-based draws for candidates proficient in French and those with experience in healthcare, social services, skilled trades, and STEM fields—areas critical for Canada's economic and infrastructure development. New categories will be introduced for experienced researchers, senior managers, transport workers such as pilots and mechanics, and highly skilled military recruits with job offers from the Canadian Armed Forces. This strategic update is part of a broader International Talent Attraction Strategy focusing on meeting labour market needs while stabilizing immigration levels. The government remains committed to increasing Francophone immigration outside Quebec, aiming for over 30,000 francophone newcomers annually through 2028. IRCC is also working to improve candidate selection and integration processes in collaboration with provinces and territories. These measures underscore Canada's intent to maintain a balanced, predictable immigration system that supports employers and communities while enhancing economic resilience and innovation.
