IRCC Announces Updated Express Entry Priorities for 2026 to Attract Skilled Talent

Speaking notes for the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship: Prioritizing top talent in 2026 Express Entry Categories

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has outlined plans to refine its Express Entry system in 2026 to better target skilled workers vital for Canada's economic growth. The system, which manages applications for permanent residence through the Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Workers, and Federal Skilled Trades programs, will continue to prioritize candidates with strong French language skills and those in health care, social services, trades, and STEM fields. New categories are being introduced to address evolving needs, including researchers and senior managers with Canadian work experience, transport professionals such as pilots and aircraft mechanics, and skilled military recruits with job offers from the Canadian Armed Forces. These changes aim to support innovation, infrastructure projects, trade, and national security. IRCC also highlighted its ongoing commitment to Francophone immigration, aiming to welcome over 30,000 French-speaking newcomers annually through 2029, with a goal of 12% of Francophone immigrants settling outside Quebec. The enhancements to Express Entry are part of a broader International Talent Attraction Strategy designed to make Canada's immigration system more balanced, predictable, and responsive to labor market demands.
