IRCC Announces Refined Focus for 2026 Express Entry to Attract Key Talent

Speaking notes for the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship: Prioritizing top talent in 2026 Express Entry Categories

The Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Lena Metlege Diab, outlined plans to sharpen Canada's Express Entry system in 2026, prioritizing skilled workers who meet the country's evolving economic needs. Express Entry will continue targeting candidates with strong French language skills and experience in healthcare, social services, skilled trades, and STEM occupations, all vital to national growth. New selection categories will be introduced for researchers and senior managers with Canadian experience, transport sector workers such as pilots and aircraft mechanics, and skilled military recruits with job offers in the Canadian Armed Forces. These additions align with broader government initiatives to support innovation, economic resilience, and national security. The government also reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing Francophone immigration outside Quebec, aiming for over 30,000 newcomers annually and ultimately 12% Francophone immigration by 2029. Invitations under various Express Entry programs, including for medical doctors and healthcare professionals, are being issued to strengthen access to care. This strategic approach is part of IRCC’s broader International Talent Attraction Strategy focused on stabilizing immigration levels while ensuring the system supports Canada's labour market and economic priorities with predictability and collaboration across provinces and employers.
