IRCC Announces New and Continuing Express Entry Categories to Prioritize Talent in 2026

Speaking notes for the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship: Prioritizing top talent in 2026 Express Entry Categories

The Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Canada's Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, outlined plans to enhance the Express Entry system in 2026. IRCC will continue focusing on applicants with strong French language skills and work experience in healthcare, trades, and STEM fields, all targeted to support Canada's economic and infrastructure growth. New Express Entry categories will be introduced for researchers and senior managers with Canadian experience, transport professionals like pilots and aircraft mechanics, and skilled military recruits with job offers from the Canadian Armed Forces. These additions reflect Canada's aim to attract specialized talent essential for innovation, trade, national security, and public safety. The Minister also reiterated the commitment to increasing Francophone immigration outside Quebec, aiming for over 30,000 francophone newcomers annually with a target of 12% by 2029. Invitations to eligible candidates, including healthcare professionals and provincial nominees, are currently being issued. This strategy is part of a broader International Talent Attraction effort to bring and retain highly skilled workers essential for Canada's labour market needs, economic vibrancy, and social cohesion. IRCC emphasizes collaboration with provinces and stakeholders to refine candidate selection and reduce barriers, supporting a predictable and sustainable immigration system.
