IRCC Announces Focused Express Entry Categories for 2026 to Attract Skilled Talent

Speaking notes for the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship: Prioritizing top talent in 2026 Express Entry Categories

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has outlined its strategy for the 2026 Express Entry draws, emphasizing targeted selection of skilled workers critical to Canada’s economic growth. The Express Entry system will continue prioritizing candidates with strong French language skills and experience in health care, social services, trades, and STEM fields, which are vital for nation-building and innovation. New categories are being introduced to better respond to Canada’s evolving labour market needs. These include researchers and senior managers with Canadian work experience to support innovation efforts, transport sector workers such as pilots and aircraft mechanics to enhance trade and supply chains, and a unique pathway for skilled foreign military recruits with offers from the Canadian Armed Forces. Additionally, a dedicated category for foreign-trained medical doctors with Canadian work experience will remain to help improve access to healthcare. IRCC’s approach aims to ensure stability and predictability in the immigration system, allowing employers and communities to plan effectively. This refined selection process forms part of a broader International Talent Attraction Strategy designed to recruit and retain global talent to meet key economic demands across the country. The government also continues to work with provinces and territories to improve credential recognition and reduce barriers for newcomers.
