IRCC Announces Focused Express Entry Categories for 2026 to Attract Skilled Talent

Speaking notes for the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship: Prioritizing top talent in 2026 Express Entry Categories

The Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), Lena Metlege Diab, outlined key priorities for the 2026 Express Entry system, emphasizing targeted selection to meet the country’s economic needs. IRCC will continue inviting candidates with strong French language skills and experience in health care, trades, education, and STEM fields to support critical sectors like housing, infrastructure, and innovation. Additionally, new Express Entry categories will be introduced for researchers, senior managers with Canadian work experience, transport professionals such as pilots and aircraft mechanics, and skilled military recruits holding job offers with the Canadian Armed Forces. These additions aim to strengthen sectors vital to Canada’s economy, trade, and national security. Existing pathways for foreign medical doctors with Canadian work experience will also continue, with invitations planned to improve health care access. The government reaffirms its commitment to Francophone immigration, aiming to welcome over 30,000 francophone newcomers annually through 2029. IRCC’s approach ties into a broader International Talent Attraction Strategy, promoting a stable and predictable immigration system that supports employers and communities alike. The department will keep refining Express Entry to ensure it aligns with Canada's labour market demands and collaborates with provinces and territories to reduce credential recognition barriers.
