IRCC Announces Focused 2026 Express Entry Categories to Attract Skilled Talent

Speaking notes for the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship: Prioritizing top talent in 2026 Express Entry Categories

The Canadian government, through IRCC, is refining its Express Entry system in 2026 to better attract top talent aligned with economic priorities. Existing selection categories for candidates with strong French skills and work experience in health care, trades, and STEM fields will continue to be prioritized. New specialized streams will invite researchers, senior managers with Canadian experience, transport professionals like pilots and aircraft mechanics, and skilled military recruits with job offers in the Canadian Armed Forces. These changes aim to address critical labour shortages while supporting innovation and national security. Express Entry remains central to managing permanent residence applications under the Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Workers, and Federal Skilled Trades programs. IRCC will continue to issue invitations to key groups, including provincial nominees and foreign-trained medical doctors, to support healthcare workforce needs. The government is also intensifying efforts to increase Francophone immigration outside Quebec, targeting over 30,000 newcomers annually and aiming for 12% Francophone immigration by 2029. These measures are part of a broader strategy to stabilize immigration levels, improve predictability for employers, and align immigration intake with Canada’s economic demands. IRCC continues collaborating with provinces, employers, and stakeholders to streamline credential recognition and enhance pathways for skilled workers to integrate into the Canadian labour market.
