IRCC Announces 2026 Express Entry Focus on Skilled Talent in Key Sectors

Speaking notes for the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship: Prioritizing top talent in 2026 Express Entry Categories

In a recent speech, Canada's Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Lena Metlege Diab outlined the government's strategy for the 2026 Express Entry system, emphasizing a focus on attracting highly skilled workers to support economic growth. The Express Entry remains central to Canada's efforts to select permanent residents through the Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Workers, and Federal Skilled Trades programs. IRCC will continue holding selection rounds targeting candidates proficient in French and those with work experience in health care, social services, trades, and STEM fields like engineering and cybersecurity. New categories introduced for 2026 will prioritize researchers and senior managers with Canadian work experience, transport sector professionals such as pilots and aircraft mechanics, and skilled military recruits with job offers from the Canadian Armed Forces. Additionally, a dedicated category for foreign medical doctors with Canadian experience was announced to improve access to health care by retaining medical professionals in the country. The government also remains committed to increasing Francophone immigration, aiming for over 30,000 francophone newcomers annually for the next three years and an eventual target of 12% francophone immigration outside Quebec by 2029. The government is maintaining efforts to balance immigration levels, improve the system's predictability, and collaborate with provinces to facilitate faster credential recognition, helping employers hire with confidence. These steps are part of a broader International Talent Attraction Strategy designed to meet Canada's evolving labour market needs.
