In a recent address, Canada's Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship outlined plans to sharpen the Express Entry system in 2026, concentrating on attracting top talent aligned with the country's economic needs. The government intends to maintain invitation rounds targeting candidates with strong French skills, and experience in health care, trades, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) fields, supporting infrastructure and innovation priorities.
New categories are being introduced within Express Entry to include researchers and senior managers with Canadian work experience, workers in transport occupations such as pilots and aircraft mechanics, and skilled military recruits with job offers from the Canadian Armed Forces. These adjustments aim to fill critical labour shortages and support Canada's sovereignty and economic resilience.
The government also affirmed its commitment to Francophone immigration, aiming to welcome over 30,000 francophone newcomers annually outside Quebec from 2026 to 2028, targeting 12% francophone immigration outside Quebec by 2029 to bolster community and economic vitality.
These updates are part of a broader International Talent Attraction Strategy, focused on restoring balance to Canada's immigration system and meeting labour market demands while maintaining humanitarian objectives. Express Entry remains central to these efforts, with ongoing refinement of candidate selection and scoring in collaboration with provinces and territories to facilitate smoother pathways for newcomers.
