IRCC Advances Express Entry Talent Prioritization with New 2026 Categories

Speaking notes for the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship: Prioritizing top talent in 2026 Express Entry Categories

Canada’s Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced updates to the Express Entry system aimed at targeting top talent to meet evolving economic needs in 2026. Building on existing successful categories, IRCC will continue inviting candidates with strong French language skills and work experience in healthcare, skilled trades, and STEM fields such as engineering and cybersecurity. These sectors align with national priorities including housing, infrastructure, and future-focused innovation. In addition to these ongoing categories, IRCC is introducing new draws for researchers and senior managers with Canadian work experience, professionals in transport occupations like pilots and aircraft mechanics, and skilled military recruits who hold job offers within the Canadian Armed Forces. These additions support federal initiatives to attract global expertise and bolster sectors critical to Canada's economy and security. Express Entry remains central to Canada’s strategy for selecting skilled immigrants through a points-based ranking system that considers factors valued by employers such as education, work experience, and language proficiency. In 2026, IRCC also plans to continue dedicated pathways for foreign-trained medical doctors and strengthen francophone immigration outside Quebec, targeting over 30,000 francophone newcomers annually. IRCC emphasized its commitment to transparency and ongoing collaboration with provinces, territories, and stakeholders to refine the immigration system and reduce barriers, including through credential recognition programs. These efforts are part of a broader government strategy to maintain balanced, predictable immigration that supports Canada’s labour market and economic growth.
