Canada Updates Express Entry Categories for 2026 to Target Skilled Talent

Canada is taking back control to return immigration to sustainable levels, while ensuring it continues to support the economy. As global competition for skilled workers intensifies, Canada’s immigration system is focused on attracting and retaining highly skilled immigrants through the International Talent Attraction Strategy.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced the Express Entry categories for 2026, emphasizing the selection of highly skilled immigrants to support key sectors and address labor shortages. The system will now include new streams for foreign medical doctors with Canadian work experience, researchers, senior managers, transport professionals like pilots and aircraft mechanics, and skilled military personnel in critical roles. IRCC continues to prioritize candidates with strong French language skills and those working in health care, social services, and trades such as carpentry and plumbing through targeted invitation rounds. The recent draws have also focused on the Canadian Experience Class to highlight immigrants already contributing to the economy. This approach is part of Canada's International Talent Attraction Strategy, aiming to sustain immigration levels aligned with labor market needs. Express Entry remains central to managing applications for federal skilled workers, tradespeople, Canadian Experience Class candidates, and some provincial nominees. The first draw under the new medical doctor category is expected soon, reflecting continued efforts to attract talent vital to Canada's economic and community needs.
